The journey began in 1983 when the Monte Carlo SS was born. It's NASCAR inspired design gave the Monte Carlo SS a one of a kind style of it's own.

Aerocoupe

In 1986 Chevrolet came out with a new package for
the Monte Carlo SS. The Aerocoupe. The Aerocoupe, with it's
sloped rear window, added stability, improved road holding, and improved air
flow. With a drag coefficient of only 3.65, this gave it approximately an
extra 5 mph on the track.
In 1986 only 200 Aerocoupes were built. This was the minimum
amount necessary if it was to be used in NASCAR racing. The Aerocoupe was
carried into 1987. Due to lack of sales, there were only 6,052 built in
1987.
Aerocoupe color options:
| EXTERIOR COLORS Black (19) Dark Maroon Metallic (79) Silver Metallic (12) White (11) |
STRIPE COLORS Gold/Red Red Gray Gold Red |
INTERIOR COLORS Gray/Maroon/Saddle Gray/Maroon/Saddle Gray/Maroon Gray/Maroon/Saddle |

| 1985-1988 | Black White Maroon Dark Maroon Silver | Red/Maroon Black/Gray Gold/Saddle |
Changes:
Mirrors- in 1986 the Monte Carlo came out with a new style mirror. The new aerodynamic mirror had more of a sport look compared to the old oval mirrors.
Bumper- in 1987 the gap between the rear bumper and the
deck lid was eliminated. This "smoothened out" the rear end.

Tail Lights- along with the bumper changing in 1987 the tail light also changed wrapping around the edge giving it more of an aerodynamic look. (see above pictures)
Rear wing- sometime in 1987 a "laydown" rear wing came in. It was on all Aerocoupes and randomly on regular SS's.
Speedometer- in 1987 the speedometer switched from an 85 mph to a 120mph gauge.
Wheels- in 1986 new aluminum wheels came out. Someone e-mailed me and said that in 1986 they weren't painted like the 87-88's. They started painting them in 1987 to make cleaning easier.
