The Exhaust

Ok,  I get a lot of e-mails about the exhaust.  "Where did you get the idea to put the tail pipes in front of the tires?".  "How did you get the true duals?"  "How much did it cost and where?"  "Do you like the headers and are they hard to install?"  The answers:

Where did I get the idea?  I wanted something different.  Most circle track race cars have them out the side with straight pipes  (no mufflers).  Also you'll see several pro-streeters like this.  With the exhaust coming out there the interior noise is VERY loud.  If you just want an everyday driver I wouldn't recommend it.  A lot of it is probably from the loud glasspacks,  but they're the only thing that'll fit.  Also,  there are laws about how far forward they can be.  Most have to be behind the passenger compartment.  So far no Boys in Blue  have given me a problem.

How did you get the true duals?  I have full length Dynomax headers.  They fit in excellent.  The glasspacks bolt right to the headers.  Then the pipes go almost straight back then curve out in front of the tires.  They have 12" chrome tips welded on.  I also had to make a cutout in the crossmember for the glasspack to fit.  The passenger side already had the curve in it for the catalytic converter.    (see below picture)

How the heck did you pass emissions?   Well,  in my state there is no testing.  This is why I also don't have any catalytic converters.

Header Installation--

The Headers are DynoMax brand.  I orders them from Summit for $205 with ceramic.  They seem to be a good fit and I didn't have to grind or cut anything in the way.  As far as how hard they are to install they're not bad but they are stubborn if it's your first time.  Now that I know how I could do them pretty quick.  It took about a day.  They also have to go in from the bottom.  I had to jack the front of the car up 2 feet then put jack stands under.  Then the passenger side one will go right in.   For the drivers side you will have to take that engine mount bolt out and the trans bolt on the x-member.  Then jack the engine a couple inches (with a hyd. jack under the trans).  Now that I have it done once it doesn't seem so hard.  Most of the time was just figuring out I had to raise the engine.  I like them and would highly recommend them.  I don't think any other header could be easier.  Once I got done I found the directions in the box which said to jack the front up 24" and engine 3" for drivers side.  The ceramic looks great and the price is decent too.  They come with gaskets and reducers.  I also don't have A/C so I don't know about mounting brackets.

How much did it cost and where was it done?  I put the headers on myself.   They cost $205 with ceramic coating from Summit.  I also put the glasspacks on myself.  They cost $16 a piece.  I had the crossmember done for $20 at a local machine shop.  The pipes were custom mandrel bend and installed at a local shop for $80 including hangars and chrome tips.

Total cost with headers, mufflers,  pipes,  and chrome tips was $337
